Traditional Uechi
Our traditional Uechi classes are taught by Sensei Chris McKaskell every Sunday morning from 9am-12pm. This class is open to anyone ages 16 and up.
Key Aspects of Traditional Uechi-Ryu:
Three Animal Styles: Incorporates Tiger (strength/vital point strikes), Dragon (inner energy), and Crane (evasion/balance) techniques.
The Foundation (Sanchin): Sanchin is considered the cornerstone kata of the style, focusing on internal strength, breathing, and physical conditioning.
Conditioning (Kote-kitae): Focuses on strengthening the body to endure hits and increase striking power through arm pounding and makiwara training.
Techniques: Emphasizes quick, direct movements, using toe kicks, open-hand blocks, and knuckle strikes to vital areas like the neck and eyes.
The 8 Kata: The style consists of eight main forms, beginning with the original three (Sanchin, Seisan, Sanseiryu) and adding five (Kanshiwa, Kanshu, Seichin, Seiryu, Kanchin) added later to aid learning.
Traditional Uechi-Ryu is a highly practical, close-quarters self-defense system that focuses on building a resilient body and developing internal energy.
